We want to bring to your attention an important weather update regarding Hurricane Lee, which is expected to impact Nova Scotia in the coming days.  

It is crucial that we all take necessary precautions and stay informed about the storm's progression to ensure our safety and well-being.  

According to the latest tropical cyclone weather warnings, Hurricane Lee will land in Nova Scotia on Saturday, September 16. The storm is anticipated to bring heavy rainfall, high winds, large waves, and potential power outages beginning today. As a result, it is essential that we all take proactive steps to prepare for this event.  

Here are some key measures you can take to ensure your safety during Hurricane Lee:  

Stay informed: Keep updated with the latest weather forecasts and advisories from reliable sources such as Environment Canada or local news outlets. Regularly check your emails and the university's official website for any important announcements or changes in campus operations.  

Secure your belongings: Take time to secure any loose items outside your residences or workspaces that could potentially become projectiles in high winds. This includes patio furniture, bicycles, and other outdoor equipment.  

Stock up on essentials: Prepare an emergency kit that includes non-perishable food items, bottled water, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, and any necessary medications. Ensure you have enough supplies to last for at least 72 hours.  

Charge electronic devices: Fully charge your cell phones and other essential electronic devices ahead of time. In case of power outages, having a portable charger or backup batteries can be extremely helpful.  

Keep windows closed: To prevent rain from infiltrating rooms and causing damage, it is advisable to keep all windows securely closed during the storm.  

Unplug electronics and backup data: To avoid potential damage from power surges or electrical issues during the storm, it is recommended to unplug non-essential electronics and appliances. It is also recommended to backup data on your devices.  

Stay indoors and away from windows: During severe weather, it is safest to remain indoors. Avoid going outside unless necessary. If you must venture outdoors, exercise caution and be aware of falling debris or downed power lines.  

Please be assured that the University Emergency Response team is actively preparing for Hurricane Lee and will continue to monitor the situation closely. We will provide timely updates regarding any changes in campus operations or additional safety measures that may be required.
