Campus Advisory - Monitoring Hurricane Lee
Campus Advisory – September 2023
Acadia University’s Emergency Response Team is closely monitoring Hurricane Lee as it moves northward toward the Maritimes. It is too early to predict the storm’s path, but some projections from the Canadian Hurricane Centre indicate that Kings County (where Wolfville is located) may be impacted within the next few days. There is a risk of increased heavy rainfall over the region on Thursday and Friday. Please monitor alerts issued by the Canadian Hurricane Centre and weather forecasts issued for nearby Kentville by Environment Canada.
Review Weather Safety Procedures
The University carefully monitors weather reports from the Environment Canada Weather Office, Emergency Management Office for the Province of Nova Scotia, and RCMP advisories, as well as consults with the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation, Town of Wolfville Public Works, and Physical Plant Services as needed before making decisions regarding campus operations during weather-related events. The University's Senior Administration determines whether to delay opening, cancel classes, or close the campus due to weather.
Now is a good time to review campus Emergency and Alert procedures, Campus Closure and Course Cancellation Policy, and provincial guidance for personal preparation plans.
Acadia ALERT Emergency Notifications
Every student and employee with an acadiau.ca email address will receive Acadia ALERTS at that email. To add additional contact methods to receive Acadia ALERT messages, please check your Acadia email for a message from me sent this past Monday, which contains a link to create a customized profile. After creating your profile, you can update your information by going to the Everbridge Acadia ALERT portal to receive email, text, or voice messages on your mobile device or secondary email.
Monitor Acadia University Inboxes and Channels
Updates will be shared as authorities develop confidence in the storm's track and conditions change significantly. Please continue to monitor your Acadia email and voicemail inboxes, the Acadia website, and social media feeds (Facebook and X, formerly Twitter). Local radio stations will also be notified of campus status updates (CBC 106.5, Magic 94.9, Rewind 89.3, and AVR 97.7).
In the event of an emergency, campus closings, or cancellations, Acadia ALERT emails and text messages and the Emergency Information Hotline (1-902-585-4363) will be activated.
Residence Life will also communicate directly with students living on campus. All students are encouraged to share updates with family and friends so that they remain informed about campus conditions and the University’s response to a potential weather event.
