Celebrating International Women’s Day: Axewomen of note

We were faced with the very happy problem of having many inspiring athletes to spotlight this year. There are several Axewomen in every sport at Acadia who are worthy of recognition, and these profiles are just a sliver of the amazing talent that has the campus buzzing.

Abbey Aucoin

Abbey Aucoin is a second-year Acadia student, currently earning a degree in biology. Abbey finished the AUS regular soccer season eighth in scoring, fourth in assists, and sixth in points. Her efforts have not only helped her fellow Axewomen win games on the soccer pitch, but she’s also netted some inspiring personal accolades along the way. Abbey was recently named Soccer Nova Scotia Female Senior Player of the Year, a 2022-23 U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian, and a 2023 AUS all-star.

Charlie Dean

Charlie Dean, recently named a 2023-24 AUS first team all-star, led the volleyball conference in assists and assists per set with 642 and 8.34 respectively. Amongst setters she topped the list in digs with 170, good enough for 2.21 digs per set. Offensively, Charlie also led all setters in kills with 55. The fourth-year kinesiology student is also impressively a two-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian.

Elizabeth Iseyemi

This season, basketball player Elizabeth Iseyemi dominated the conference in points per game with 22.0 and field goal percentage at 50.1 per cent. She was second in rebounds and rebounds per game with 226 and 11.3 respectively, while also being third in steals with 37. Elizabeth’s points per game put her second in the country, while she finished fourth in the country in rebounds per game. The fourth-year chemistry student has notably also been named a 2023-24 U SPORTS second team All-Canadian and a 2023-24 AUS first team all-star.

Ella Campbell

Ella Campbell has consistently demonstrated her cross-country skills this season, having achieved a top-two performance in every meet in 2023 for the Axewomen. This team captain has also proven herself in the classroom: Now in her third year of kinesiology, Ella is a two-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian.

Ella Collins

This season, women’s swimmer Ella Collins has had a record year in the pool. The second-year kinesiology student broke two AUS records, each held for over 10 years, setting a new standard in the 50m and 200m breaststroke events. Ella has also raised the bar by setting four Acadia team records this year. Her successful season qualified her for six events at the U SPORTS swimming championships where she is representing Acadia on the national stage.

Sara Grant

Hailing from Melrose, NB, Sara Grant is a third-year Acadia science student and a major force for the women’s rugby team. Sara led the Axewomen to a third-place finish in the regular season standings and personally finished second in the conference in points with 44 on the season, with four tries and 12 conversions. Named the 2023 AUS women’s rugby MVP, Sara was also selected for the 2023 AUS all-star team, the second all-star recognition in her career. And if that’s not enough, Sara is a two-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian.
