Acadia Alumni Dinner and Awards Ceremony

Join alumni and friends on May 23, 2019 at Pier 21 in Halifax for the Annual Acadia Alumni Dinner and Awards in support of Acadia students and to honour our 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Dr. David Levy (’72), and Young Alumni Award recipient, Heather MacDonald (’09).

COST: $125 per ticket; $1,250 for a table of 10

Young alumni who graduated between 2009-2019 can purchase a ticket for $75.

New online auction!

Visit our Acadia Alumni Online Auction to benefit the Athletics Program at Acadia University. The purpose of this auction is to allow those who are not able to attend our 2019 Alumni Dinner and Awards evening to participate in the event and contribute to Acadia’s Athletics programs. All proceeds of this auction will go to the Acadia Athletics fund. 

Items are available for bidding from 10 a.m. EDT on May 8 and will close at 11:50 p.m. EDT on May 22. The winner will be contacted May 23 and announced during the Alumni Dinner later that evening. Terms and conditions are noted below – bid early and often, and best of luck to all!

Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient

Dr. David Levy (’72)

Dr. David H. Levy (’72) is arguably one of the most enthusiastic and famous amateur astronomers of our time. Although he has never taken a class in astronomy, he has written over three dozen books, contributes to three astronomy magazines and has appeared on television programs featured on the Discovery and the Science Channels. Among Dr. Levy’s accomplishments are 23 comet discoveries, the most famous being Shoemaker-Levy 9 that collided with Jupiter in 1994; a few hundred shared asteroid discoveries; an Emmy for the documentary Three Minutes to Impact; five honorary doctorates in science, including one from Acadia in 1995; and a PhD that combines astronomy and English Literature.  Currently, he is the editor of the web magazine Sky’s Up! and has a monthly column, Skyward, in the local Vail Voice paper. Dr. Levy continues to hunt for comets and asteroids, and lectures worldwide. He lives in Vail, Arizona with his wife, Wendee Wallach-Levy.

 

Young Alumni Award Recipient

Heather MacDonald (’09)

Heather MacDonald (’09) is the Executive Director of the MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning, a charity and community hub located in Dartmouth with the mission of empowering youth ages 12-19 to access their individual creativity and a path to success. MacDonald brings a multidisciplinary approach to her work, having worked in training, facilitation and program development for organizations such as Junior Achievement, YMCA and Scouts Canada. During the course of her career, she has partnered with corporate organizations, governments, non-profit organizations and small businesses to build relationships to improve the well-being of communities. MacDonald’s deeply rooted passion for service leadership, her work ethic and her desire to help others comes from growing up in an entrepreneurial family in rural Nova Scotia. As a youth herself, MacDonald participated in music and theatre programs that have shaped who she is today. She has a Recreation Management degree from Acadia with minor in Business. She spent her first two years at Acadia in the School of Music. In 2015, she graduated from the Executive MBA program at Saint Mary’s University and was selected to participate in the 21Leaders for the 21st Century Program. MacDonald is also an active volunteer with Scotiabank Bluenose Marathon and DASC – Dartmouth Adult Services Centre. Her love for lifelong learning reflects a determination to help youth and communities succeed.
