Reminiscence and reconnection hallmarks of All-’60s Reunion at Acadia

by Sgambati, Fred

By Fred Sgambati (’83)

More than 200 Acadia alumni, friends and family returned to campus to reconnect and reminisce June 21-23, 2024 during an All-’60s Reunion Weekend that was jam-packed with activities, information and fun!

Ten classes from 1960-69 were represented and kicked off the festivities with a reception in the Wu Welcome Centre at Alumni Hall on Friday. There was no shortage of things to do Saturday either, with a campus tour to start the day, followed by Class Meetings and a Q and A session moderated by Executive Director, Alumni Affairs Oonagh Proudfoot (’93, ’06) featuring Chancellor Bruce Galloway (’68, ’03 HON), University President Dr. Jeff Hennessy (’99), and Vice-President, Advancement Nancy Handrigan (’92).

Guided tours of the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens were also a highlight, as was the Reunion Banquet in Wheelock Dining Hall Saturday evening. Guests were dressed to the nines and enjoyed a lovely supper, live music, great conversation, and Class members literally rose to the occasion to recite their class yells. A stirring rendition of the alma mater song was a fitting and wonderful way to close out the evening.

The Reunion Weekend concluded Sunday with an inspirational service in the Manning Memorial Chapel and a farewell luncheon in the Sheldon L. Fountain Learning Commons.

Folks came from far and wide, including Distance Award recipient Aubrey Cobham (’63, ’67) from Salt Spring Island, British Columbia; Judy Adams ('67) from Loughton, England; Carolyn McKay (’62) from Cork, Ireland; and Adelaide (Chu) Tam, from North York, Ontario, with her two daughters, Linda (Tam) Low and Audrey (Tam) Yong.

Like many alumni, Adelaide met her husband, George Tam ('61), at Acadia. They married, started a family and, sadly, George passed away in 1974, a year after he, Adelaide and their two young children had visited Acadia. Adelaide’s arrival at the All-’60s Reunion accompanied by her daughters was an emotional, wonderful time that they enjoyed to the fullest.

Other award winners were also acknowledged as part of the weekend’s activities. Pete (’64) and Sandi Connelly (’66) were the First to Register, and the Reunion Cup was awarded to the Class of 1964.
