Amalkewinu’k Opening Reception

October 3, 2025 (7:00 pm)

Location: Quiet Reading Room, Vaughan Memorial Library

This exhibition explores the evolution of Mi'kmaw regalia through a blend of contemporary and historical photographs, emphasizing its cultural, artistic, and ceremonial significance. Featuring studio portraits of Mi'kmaw community members in regalia alongside archival images, the exhibition highlights the transformation and ongoing relevance of regalia in Mi'kmaw traditions. By presenting distinctively Mi'kmaw regalia, Amalkewinu’k challenges misconceptions about Indigenous cultural uniformity and celebrates Mi'kmaw artistic heritage, honoring both past and present community artists who continue to preserve these essential traditions.

Amalkewinu’k first opened at the Treaty Space Gallery in February 2025, and has since been featured by CBC News, APTN, Visual Arts News, We Are All Treaty People, Indigenous WatchDog, and others. We are excited to be bringing it to Acadia University as the next stop on the gallery tour, in celebration of Mi’kmaq History Month.
