Title: Models of Higher Education: Liberal, Classical Liberal Arts, Public Liberal Arts, and Critical, Anti-colonial Models

Description: We’ll present a brief history along with what is often currently meant by liberal education, classical liberal arts education, public liberal arts education, and also give some background on critical and anti-colonial models of education in the university setting. We’ll focus on how these educational philosophies typically affect the structure of programs (giving specific illustrative examples from other universities and colleges), including how “distribution credits” are envisioned, what programs of study are offered, how students apply to or choose a program of study, ratio of coursework within versus outside of the program of study, and how programs or academic units interact. We’ll also touch on implications for pedagogy (how individual courses are structured and taught) and co-curricular programs. A [30-40]-minute presentation will be followed by interactive small group discussion.
