Acadia’s Historic Patterson Hall Officially Re-Opened

Eighty-year-old building to see new life as classroom and common space for business students with future space available for economic development

Acadia University today formally opened newly renovated Patterson Hall, home to many of Acadia’s business students. Thanks to funding from the Government of Canada Knowledge Infrastructure Program (KIP) under the Economic Action Plan and the Province of Nova Scotia, the 16-month construction project was realized.  Funding of nearly $4.2 million was split equally between the Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia.

Key elements of the top to bottom renovation included complete gutting of the five-story building interior with the exception of the elevator, stairs and some interior walls, including the removal of hazardous materials. New partitions were built on floors one through three, the building’s mechanical and electrical systems were revitalized and new windows were installed to improve energy efficiency. Classrooms and breakout rooms as well as a large lounge and common area have been fully outfitted. The top two floors of the building are available for future development, preferably through partnerships with investors and entrepreneurs.

“These investments created jobs for people in Nova Scotia at a critical time while improving the infrastructure that Acadia University will need to maintain its reputation as an advanced education leader,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia. “Our government’s support for the knowledge economy has not only made a difference in the short term but has also set the foundation for a better learning environment and future prosperity in Atlantic Canada"

"Acadia University has a venerable reputation across Canada and around the world," said MLA Jim Morton on behalf of Marilyn More, Minister of Labour and Advanced Education. "The school’s list of alumni is impressive. The upgrades and improvements to Patterson Hall are helping Acadia to continue its renowned tradition of preparing the leaders of tomorrow, in a way that is more economically and environmentally efficient."

“This is a significant positive step forward for Acadia during an important time in our history,” said Ray Ivany, Acadia’s President and Vice Chancellor. “Patterson Hall represents Acadia’s past and its well-earned reputation for providing high quality education and producing highly qualified graduates while its renovation represents our future as an academic innovator and community builder. We are grateful for the support we’ve received from both the Federal and Provincial governments and we’ve received very positive feedback from the users of this building. We look forward to the many new exciting ventures that will arise as a result of new partnerships and opportunities.”
