Bystander Intervention Training
What is Bystander Intervention for Harassment?
Sharing some resources regarding how you can intervene when you witness any form of harassment. The international Organization, Hollaback, is a movement to end harassment in all forms. We all have a “role to play in disrupting harassment and building a culture where it is no longer seen as “just the price you have to pay” for being a woman, 2SLGBTQIA+, a person of colour, or any other marginalized identity. We teach people to take action, and to reach across their own identities to ally with others and establish a united front against harassment each time we witness it.”
Below is a description of the Hollaback 5 Ds to Bystander Intervention. Along with registration links to their upcoming FREE webinars. I urge everyone on campus to peruse their huge host of resources and learn how you can be an active bystander and stand up against harassment in all it’s forms.
Please stay tuned for more trainings that will be open to the campus community through partnerships with the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Office, Egale Canada and Hollaback Ottawa. There will be staff/faculty specific training as well as student focused trainings.
Responding as a Bystander
What’s worse than being targeted with harassment because of your race, sex, religion, color, gender, size, orientation, disability, age, or origin? Being targeted while surrounded by bystanders who see what is happening, but then do nothing.
It doesn’t have to be that way.
At this moment in history, we are witnessing a spike in disrespect, harassment, and hate violence. As bystanders, we need to be especially vigilant and aware of what disrespect, harassment, and hate violence look like in order to be able to stand up and intervene at a time when people need it most.
You can make a choice to actively and visibly take a stand against harassment. The Five D’s are different methods you can use to support someone who’s being harassed, emphasize that harassment is not okay, and demonstrate to people in your life that they too have the power to make our communities and workplaces safer.
Hollaback International hosts many trainings one almost every day of the week! Check out the full listing.
