Online Trainings for Bystander Intervention Against Harassment
Right To Be has multiple upcoming training webinars – but why should you take them?
“Right To Be became a nonprofit in 2010 under the name Hollaback!. What began as a simple idea – a blog to collect stories of street harassment – became part of an international movement.
We kept documenting stories, but we began to do more.
We created Bystander Intervention Trainings to teach people how to stop harassment, with a set of simple and safe tactics we call the 5Ds.
We also built more platforms to offer support. For example, on our HeartMob platform, people facing online harassment can ask for exactly the kind of support they need, and get it when they need it, from vetted bystanders with the tools and resources to help.
As our work expanded, so did our mission. Right To Be grew from addressing public street harassment… to ending harassment in all its forms.”
Having a community full of people means we have a responsibility to take care of each other and online training like bystander intervention and conflict resolution webinars are great opportunities for us to learn and grow together. Often, we assume that if we don’t see a problem, there isn’t one, but that isn't the case. Online webinars are great opportunities for us to learn how to recognize harassment when we see it and how to do something about it. Harassment and discrimination don’t need to be a part of our university experience, we CAN do something about it and these webinars are easy ways for us to address it.
Right To Be offers free training webinars through Zoom, but that isn’t all they do, check out their site.

Stand up against harassment! With Julie Lalonde! August 7th @ 5PM

Bystander intervention for youth: how to show up for othersAugust 8th @ 2:30PM
The impact of harassment on youth is very real. It can lead to trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, decreased class participation, and thoughts about transferring schools. Right To Be believes that stopping harassment amongst young people depends on empowering youth to take action themselves. This one-hour training recommended for grades 8 – 12 offers a specially adapted version of our 5Ds of bystander intervention methodology.
The training can offer an intersectional approach (examining harassment in all forms) or specifically address bystander intervention to stop gender-based harassment, anti-LGBTQ+ harassment, or race-based harassment amongst youth. We begin by offering participants an understanding of what harassment is, how it’s different than bullying, and that it can happen anywhere – at school or on campus, on playgrounds, on buses, or in stores and other places of business. We’ll talk through five strategies for intervention – Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay, and Direct – and teach participants how to prioritize their own safety while intervening. Then, through our expanded interactive learning experience, we incorporate realistic practice scenarios and group feedback sessions to help participants achieve an applied understanding of the 5Ds concepts and leave them feeling more confident to intervene the next time they witness harassment happen amongst their peers.
