Chris Callbeck to Receive Prestigious Award from Canadian Research Knowledge Network

Acadia University Supports its Bahamian Students Through New Fund

Hurricane Dorian served a devastating blow to the Bahamas when it struck the Caribbean country Labour Day weekend. For decades, students from the Bahamas have been coming to Acadia and the University has a strong and well-established alumni presence in the country. Currently, 145 students from the Bahamas are registered at Acadia for the 2019-20 academic year and there is concern campus-wide for these students and their families.

Acadia campus will be open on Monday

The Acadia campus is in full operation and all facilities will be open as usual Monday morning, including scheduled classes. We will assess our campus and local circumstances prior to 6 a.m. on Monday and if there are any changes required to our anticipated opening, it will be announced at that time.

Hurricane Dorian Update

Hurricane Dorian is tracking towards the Maritimes and is expected to reach the Nova Scotia coast by Saturday morning. It is expected to bring a significant amount of wind (60 to 80 km/h) and, at times, heavy downpours with total rainfall amounts possibly exceeding 75-100 mm over a 24 hour period.

Sandra Irving to receive Canadian Red Cross Power of Humanity Award

The Canadian Red Cross will honour Sandra Irving with its Humanitarian Award at this year’s Power of Humanity Awards Dinner in November 2019. Sandra is a member of Acadia’s Class of 1974 and recipient of an honorary doctorate from Acadia in 2017.

Acadia Community Learning Program hosts fourth summer English language program

This summer, the Acadia Community Learning Program hosted 65 participants in an English language program created for newcomer families in the Annapolis Valley.

The Acadia Community Learning Program (ACLP) was launched in 2016 in response to the sudden influx of refugees from Syria and other parts of the Middle East and Africa. Summer language programs for parents and children, however, are not available in the Valley through federally and provincially funded programs because of a lack of funding in rural areas.
