Dr. Gordon MacNeill (’48, ’87 HON) once thought he wouldn’t go to university. He would finish high school, get a job in his hometown of Sydney, Cape Breton and that would be it. Post-secondary school wasn’t really part of the plan.

New strategic plan positions Acadia for the 21st century

Acadia University unveiled its new strategic plan, Acadia 2025, during an online campus-wide presentation on Friday, November 27, 2020.

The plan, developed over two years through extensive cross-campus consultation, finetunes Acadia's vision, mission, and values and identifies five strategic directions to guide the University toward 2025. The overarching theme for the plan is "transforming lives for a transforming world."

Acadia revises sexualized violence policy, improves supports

Acadia University has released a significantly revised policy to tackle sexualized violence. The 36-page document outlines definitions, processes and rights, including education and preventative measures around consent and rape culture. It replaces an eight-page policy implemented in 2019.

Research Nova Scotia supports new health researchers

Research Nova Scotia (RNS) recently announced over $2 million in funding for new health researchers in Nova Scotia to help increase capacity in this critical area. The 21 recipients are located at Dalhousie, Acadia, St. Francis Xavier, Saint Mary’s, Mount Saint Vincent, and Cape Breton University as well as Nova Scotia Health and the IWK.

Acadia and Glooscap First Nation launch Indigenous Speakers Series

The Acadia University Office of Indigenous Affairs and Glooscap First Nation will present an online speaker series to share Mi'kmaq knowledge with the community in the New Year. Initially planned to be in-person campus events, the series will now be presented live online and incorporated in future Acadia curriculum lessons. Nova Scotia Culture and Heritage sponsored the series.

"This is an exciting opportunity to share our culture, customs, and philosophies with the entire community – Indigenous and non-Indigenous," explained Zabrina Whitman, Acadia's Coordinator of Indigenous Affairs. "There is value in better understanding each other, so this series is an easy and entertaining way to gain knowledge."

New CASTL awards support students and industry growth

The Canadian Alliance for Skills and Training in Life Sciences (CASTL) recently announced financial awards of $5,000 for 32 post-secondary students across Atlantic Canada to support their academic studies in life sciences. This financial award program will support life sciences students enrolled in co-operative education from Acadia University, Université de Moncton and the University of Prince Edward Island, who will each receive scholarships in their second and third years.

“We are delighted to award the inaugural CASTL Financial Awards to 15 Acadia students who will be engaging in work-integrated learning experiences in the life sciences. This exciting new initiative has the overall vision of training and educating the next generation of highly skilled bioscience professionals who will grow bioscience in the Maritimes and across Canada, said Dr. Suzie Currie, Dean of Pure and Applied Science, Acadia University.
