J R (Pat) Ellis Scholar-Bursary

The J R (Pat) Ellis Scholar-Bursary is awarded annually to a student entering Acadia University from southwest Nova Scotia. The recipient will be a student for whom the cost of post-secondary education might be an impediment to attendance. This scholar-bursary was established in honour of Mr JR (Pat) Ellis, Chairman of Acadia's Board of Governors from 1990-1999 in recognition of his contribution to the University both as a friend and long-time benefactor and to reflect his wish that all students who are academically eligible should have the privilege of attending Acadia University.

J. Fred Fraser Scholarship

Scholarship

The J. Fred Fraser Scholarship. An award of $470 a year, awarded every second year for two years, endowed by Mrs. J. Fred Fraser and family of Halifax, Nova Scotia, in memory of the late Hon. J. Fred Fraser, for many years a member of the Board of Governors of Acadia University, is to be awarded to a student with high standing and great promise with a view to assisting them to complete a university degree. The scholarship is to be a credit one half on the fees of the junior year and one half on the fees of the senior year. Failure to maintain high standing throughout the junior year will result in the forfeiture of the scholarship during the senior year.

J. Glen Tillotson Scholarship

The J. Glen Tillotson Scholarship is awarded annually to a student who achieves high academic standing in an Electronics course, within the Department of Physics. The recipient will be selected by the Physics Department’s Scholarship Committee. This scholarship honours the memory of the late Professor Tillotson, a faculty member and expert in the area of electronics and acoustics in the Department of Physics from 1955 until 1986 and recognizes his contributions in developing the electronics offerings at Acadia.

J. Sherman Bleakney Memorial Scholarship in Biology

Scholarship of up to $1,000 | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Biology

Established in 2020 by friends, colleagues, and former students in honour of Dr. Sherman Bleakney (1928-2019), a two-time Acadia graduate and professor of zoology at Acadia from 1957 until his retirement in 1988. Awards are made at the discretion of the Head of Biology to students pursuing honours research in Biology, with a preference for studies in zoology or marine ecology. Value: up to $1,000

J.W. Johnstone, Jr. Scholarship in the Faculty of Professional Studies

Scholarship of up to $2,000 | Eligibility: Professional Studies, Entering final Year

The J.W. Johnstone, Jr. Scholarship in the Faculty of Professional Studies awarded annually to a superior student entering the senior/final year of an undergraduate degree program in that Faculty. The criteria for the award of the scholarship shall be broadly based academic excellence as demonstrated in the previous year’s marks and on the basis of an interview and a dossier, including a representative piece of work where applicable, which will be scrutinized by an examining committee.

J.W. Johnstone Jr. graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree as one of the four members of Acadia's first graduating class in June 1843. Following graduation he studied law in Halifax and practiced there until 1876 when he became the first County Judge for District Number 1, Halifax County. He was the first President of the Associated Alumni of Acadia College. The award, in the amount of $2000, is provided by the Associated Alumni of Acadia University.

Jack Bone H.M.G. Memorial Bursary

The Jack Bone H.M.G. Memorial Bursary is awarded on recommendation of the Director of the School of Music to assist promising piano students in the pursuit of musical studies. The bursary, which may be renewed, will be awarded to entering or returning students originating from Cape Breton with demonstrated financial need and good academic standing.

The bursary was established by the estate of Jack Bone to commemorate three wonderful musicians who greatly influenced him; Gordon Harrigan, Allan Joseph MacDonald and St. Clair Grannum.

Jack C. (’69) and Faye MacDonald Bursary

Bursary | Eligibility: Nova Scotia

Established in 2022 by Jack and Faye MacDonald, this bursary is awarded on a renewable basis to a student from the Halifax Regional Municipality, preferably Halifax West High School, who demonstrates financial need. The recipient shows leadership skills in school or the community through volunteer or extra-curricular activities.

Jack MacDonald grew up in Halifax, graduating from Halifax West High School in 1965. He attended Acadia University, studying math and engineering and worked in the Dining Hall where he got a taste of the hospitality industry. His executive career began in 1970 with Saga Foods, the caterer at Acadia – Jack worked for Saga while he was a student and worked his way up to the role of President in Canada. He has held a number of senior executive positions throughout his career – Co-president at Clearwater Seafoods Limited, CEO of Marriott Corporation’s Canadian Division, President of MDS Heath Group’s Communicare Division, and finally Compass Group Canada & ESS North America where he was CEO and Chair until his retirement in 2012.

Jack has served on the Boards of the Toronto Zoo Campaign “Wild for Life”, the Canadian Aboriginal Business Hall of Fame, the Canadian Foundation for Dietetic Research, the President’s Advisory Council for Humber College, the Colorectal Screening Initiative Foundation and the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. He was also a member of the Province of Ontario Investment and Trade Advisory Council. A non-executive Director of Sienna Senior Living from 2011 to 2022, Jack is also the Board Chair of the Micco Group of Companies since 2018. He has an honorary Bachelor of Applied Science degree from Humber College and is a graduate of the Institute of Corporate Directors program at the Rotman School of Management (University of Toronto).

Jack Harris (’31) Bursary

Endowed in memory of John Oyler’s uncle, the Jack Harris Bursary is available on an annual basis to full-time students majoring in business who demonstrate financial need, with a preference for those from the Annapolis Valley (Hants, Kings, Annapolis, Digby Counties) and Lunenberg County.

Jack Harris (John Rupert) was born in 1910 and grew up in Wolfville, graduating from Acadia in 1931 with a BA. He pursued post-graduate education at Harvard University, earning an MBA in 1934. Jack’s nephew, John Oyler (’59) established the bursary in his memory, supporting students pursuing education and careers in business, something which brought much success to both Jack and John.

Jack Scholz Memorial Award

The Jack Scholz Memorial Award. Established in 2013 by a grateful former student-athlete in memory of Jack Scholz. Jack was a strong leader and an inspirational member of the Acadia community. A professor in Acadia's School of Recreation and Physical Education, he served for many years as the Head Coach of the men's and women's varsity swim teams, and was the founder of the S.M.I.L.E program. To be awarded annually on the recommendation of the Director of Athletics to a varsity athlete who demonstrates outstanding leadership skills, commitment to achievement and teamwork. Preference for a member of the swim team. Where possible, the award will be made to a swimmer who is enrolled in a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Kinesiology.

Established in 2015 by alumni and friends in Jack Scholz’s memory, this scholarship is awarded annually to a member of the women’s or men’s varsity swim team in recognition of academic excellence. Jacqueline R Carter Scholarship

The Jacqueline R Carter Scholarship is awarded annually to an entering or returning student in a degree program at Acadia University. Preference will be given to a student(s) graduating from a high school in Newfoundland. The James and Dorothy McNally Bursaries are provided to two students from the Atlantic Provinces, in their second or subsequent year of an undergraduate degree, with a minimum 70% academic average. The recipients will have demonstrated strong leadership-character type qualities and financial need. One recipient is to be a varsity athlete and will be selected based on the recommendation of the Director of Varsity Athletics. The second is to be involved in extra-curricular activities, other than varsity athletics, and will be selected by the University Bursary and Loan Committee.

The awards have been established to honour James and Dorothy McNally by their children Carole(UNB), Daniel(Acadia), Stephen(Acadia), Mary(DAL), Gregory(DAL), Edward(Acadia) and John(Acadia), all who benefited greatly from their parents commitment to providing and supporting them in their educational and extra-curricular pursuits.

The James L. Stokesbury Memorial Scholarship in History provided by the family and friends of the late Dr. Stokesbury, is awarded annually to a student entering the second or subsequent year of a program leading to a major or honours degree in History, preferably with an interest in European history. Dr. James L. Stokesbury (1934 -1995) (BA Acadia, MA Western, PhD Duke) was a long­time member of the Department of History at Acadia University, serving as Head of the Department from 1980-1986. He was an outstanding teacher, and an author of international repute.

Established in memory of Dr. James Snowdon by friends and family, this scholarship is awarded to an honours history major in the 3rd or 4th year of study in recognition of academic excellence. The student will preferably focus their honours work on a topic in Canadian history.

Jim Snowdon, originally from Sackville, New Brunswick, graduated from the University of New Brunswick and joined the History Department at Acadia in the early 1980s where he was on faculty until shortly before his death in 2008. His research area was the history of the Maritime Provinces and material culture. He is remembered well by his colleagues and students. Value: $1,000.

JD Walker Bursary

The JD Walker Bursary is awarded annually, for the years 2003-2011 to an entering student who is a graduate of Bridgetown High School. Subsequent to 2011 the bursary will be open to an entering student from any high school in Nova Scotia. The bursary is awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and satisfactory academic performance with a preference for a student who has made a contribution to school life through activities such as drama, music and athletics.

The Jim 'Lefty' MacVicar Memorial Awards are awarded annually to two Nova Scotia students entering a degree program at Acadia University with a minimum 75% entering average. The awards will be made on the basis of academic performance and commitment to athletics prior to attending Acadia University. Preference will be given to students who are a member of an Acadia University varsity athletics team.

The endowed award was established in 2007 by The John and Judy Bragg Family Foundation, in consultation with the MacVicar Family, to honour late Jim "Lefty" MacVicar (BA Acadia, 1955; BED Acadia 1956) who taught John Bragg at Oxford High School. Jim was a proud Axeman on the Acadia University hockey team.

John & Helen Huard Football Awards were established in 2020 by former members of the varsity football program coached by John Huard. The awards will be presented to student-athletes who are members of the men’s football program. The recipients shall be in good academic standing, show a passion for guiding and inspiring teammates to compete at the highest level and be positive role models in the community. The recipients will be recommended by the Director of Athletics in consultation with the head coach of the men’s football program.

The John & Helen Huard Football Awards were created to recognize the impact John Huard had at Acadia University. John guided the football Axemen program to two national championship titles in 1979 and 1981. His disciplined approach to coaching and in life made a positive impact on the lives of those who played for him.

John and Margaret Forbes Award in Entrepreneurship

Award of up to $15,000 | Eligibility: Current 3rd year, Nova Scotia

Established in 2018 by Margaret and Gerald Kazma through the Kazma Family Foundation in honour and memory of Margaret's brother John A. Forbes and wife Margaret (MacIsaac), this renewable award is granted to third-year students annually, one female and one male. The John Endon Sproule Entrance Scholarship ($1000 annually for up to four years) is awarded each year to an entering student who has a distinguished high school record. John Hugh Robinson Scholarship

The John Hugh Robinson Scholarship is awarded annually to a third-year student in the Bachelor of Business Administration program. The recipient will have a passion for life and possess an outstanding entrepreneurial spirit, demonstrated through a strong interest in small business management, sustainable business development and a sense of adventure. The student will take pride and have made outstanding contributions to his/her local and Acadia communities and demonstrate a commitment to life-long learning. The scholarship is established by family, friends and the Acadia community to celebrate the life of John Hugh Robinson '00 who died suddenly in November, 1999. John was a Dean's list scholar who left a profound mark on the graduating class of 2000. He was a great friend to many and underlying all of his relationships and activities was an enthusiasm and joy for life. John took great pride in his family, his friends, his home province of Newfoundland and his University.

Preference will be given to Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Kinesiology student-athlete(s) of high academic standing, who display sportsmanship and strong leadership skills. The award(s) will be chosen on the recommendation of the head coach of the Men’s Soccer team and Director of Varsity Athletics.

John MacIntyre (BSc, Acadia, 1997), as a member of the Varsity Men’s Soccer team was both an AUS All-Star and Academic All-Canadian award recipient. This endowed scholarship was established in 2005 by Mary, Gus and Janet MacIntyre in memory of their son and brother.

The John V. and Cora B. Cossaboom Scholarship was established by the late John and Cora Cossaboom who were born in Digby County, Nova Scotia. The scholarship of $950 is to be awarded annually to a needy student.

Jonathan Andrews Memorial Award

Award of up to $3,000 | Eligibility: Pure and Applied Science, Current 2nd year

The Jonathan Andrews Memorial Award. Established in 2013 by family and friends in memory of Jonathan Andrews. To be awarded to a returning Acadia second year undergraduate science student in recognition of an exceptional connection with the greater community. Through the use of intellect, empathy, and humour, the recipient will have had significant positive impact on others. Awards will be made based on applications to be reviewed by committee.

Jordan Bursaries

Bursary | Eligibility: Arts, Pure and Applied Science, Nutrition

The Jordan Bursaries. Through the will of the late Mrs. Janet C. Jordan, the sum of $520 is available for assistance of needy women. One half is to be used to assist needy women in the Faculty of Arts and the other half to assist students in the School of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Joyce Foundation Bursaries

Bursary of up to $5,000 | Eligibility: Arts, Professional Studies, Pure and Applied Science, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island

The Joyce Foundation Bursaries, valued at $5,000 annually and renewable, providing a maximum of four years of support per recipient, will be directed in particular to Canadian students preferably from Atlantic Canada or Ontario with demonstrated financial need who have shown exceptionality through a combination of volunteerism, leadership, citizenship, and character.

The Joyce Foundation was created by Canadian entrepreneur Ronald V. Joyce. His philanthropy reflects a deep-rooted sense of responsibility to give back to his community. The Foundation's primary focus is to provide access to education for children and youth with significant financial need or facing other socio-economic barriers to success. Born in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia in 1930, Mr. Joyce is best known as the legendary Canadian entrepreneur who, in 1964, invested in the first Tim Hortons donut shop in Hamilton, Ontario and then grew the business into one of the most successful food service chains in the world.

JW Johnstone Jr Scholarship in Professional Studies

Scholarship | Eligibility: Professional Studies

The J.W. Johnstone, Jr. Scholarship in the Faculty of Professional Studies  awarded annually to a superior student entering the senior/final year of an undergraduate degree program in that Faculty. The criteria for the award of the scholarship shall be broadly based academic excellence as demonstrated in the previous years marks and on the basis of an interview and a dossier which will be scrutinized by an examining committee. J.W. Johnstone, Jr. graduated with the Bachelor of Arts degree as one of our four members of Acadia's first graduating class in June 1843. Following graduation, he studied law in Halifax and practiced there until 1876 when he became the first County Judge for District Number 1, Halifax County. He was the first President of the Associated Alumni of Acadia College. The award, in the amount of $2000, is provided by the Associated Alumni of Acadia University.
